How I Met Your Mother's New DVD Set Has Alternate Ending - and a Surprise!

Many viewers found How I Met Your Mother 's maudlin season finale last March anything but legendary. (As PEOPLE noted, it was ceme – wait for it – tery.)

But fans of the show may be happier with an unseen – and far more upbeat – version contained in a new DVD box set available Tuesday.

Without spoiling it, let's just say the "alternate ending" of the finale, "Last Forever," will cause tears of joy instead of grief. (Although, unfortunately, it still contains Lily's tragic bangs of 2016.)

As co-creator Craig Thomas alluded to while filming the final season, the box set also clears up one lingering HIMYM mystery: Why did Ted (Josh Radnor) end up in bed with a pineapple during season 1? (Hint: The payoff, as twisty as a blue French horn, randomly involves Kyle MacLachlan's The Captain.)

The DVD set, suited up in a handsome Bro Code playbook, contains all nine seasons of the CBS series and is chock full of extras, including Cristin Milioti's audition to become The Mother, and the cast's appearance at San Diego's Comic Con in 2013, which ended up being the most popular panel of the year.

It's a sweet, quirky send-off for a sweet, quirky series.
