The news that Prince Albert of Monaco and Princess Charlene are expecting twins surprised many, especially Prince Albert!

When the princess went to the doctor for a routine sonogram, she first telephoned Albert to say, "We're going to have a baby!" his good friend, New York plastic surgeon Dr. Jon Turk, tells PEOPLE. "They called him out of a meeting, and he was very excited, but then had to go back to the meeting."

A few minutes later, there was a new development. "She had to call him back when they saw a second baby on the sonogram," says Turk. "He was busy in a meeting [and didn't know why she was calling] and reluctant to come out. But when he came out, she said, 'We're going to have two babies!' Two calls for two kids!"

With the twins due in December – and unlikely to be crawling around for months after – the prince is already baby-proofing the palace, Turk says.

"The princess told me that he's been walking around their residence and their summer house, starting to childproof the house." says Turk. "He's worried about the corners of tables. And she's saying they're not even born yet! He's also going to put air in all the balls for soccer and basketball. He's already getting ready and it's still years away before they can play with a ball."

The sex of the twins remain unknown – at least to Albert. "When I asked him, 'Do you know what the sex is?' He said no," Turk says. "When I said, 'Do you want to know?' He said 'I'd love either and I'd love to have a surprise.' " So for now, "I think Princess Charlene is respecting his wishes," says Turk. "I'm not sure if she knows, but I don't think he does."

Meanwhile, the prince and princess, who hosted the Princess Grace Foundation USA Gala on Oct. 8 in Los Angeles, "are really excited," says Turk. And Princess Charlene "is glowing and in great health," he adds. "She gets a little tired at night, but she's been resting a lot and she's well taken care of so everything is one hundred percent."

Times two.
