Marysville High School Shooter Planned Deadly Meeting with Friends

As details begin to slowly emerge from the day Jaylen Fryberg decided to shoot five of his friends, it appears he had a plan.

Jaylen, 15, texted his friends and asked to meet them inside the Marysville-Pilchuck High School's cafeteria on Friday. He was armed with a .40-caliber Beretta, which belonged to a family member, officials say.

"[He] arranged to meet with friends at the lunch hour," says Snohomish County Sheriff Ty Trenary. "Witnesses confirm the five victims were at the table when the shooter opened fire, striking the victims before turning the gun on himself."

At the table, he shot Zoe Galasso, 14, who died at the scene. Gia Soriano and Shaylee Chuckulnaskit, both 14, were taken to the hospital in critical condition, where Gia was eventually taken off life support. He also shot his cousins Andrew Fryberg, 15, and Nate Hatch, 14, who were taken to a separate hospital. Andrew remains in critical condition while Nate has been upgraded to stable.

Since the day of the shooting less than a week ago, the rural community, located about 40 miles north of Seattle, continues to grieve for their children, students and friends.

"We've got families all over Tulalip, all over Marysville who are grieving really hard right now," says Tony Hatch, a tribal representative who spoke to the community at a school gathering on Sunday. "We can never understand why this may have happened."
