Dierks Bentley announced on Wednesday that the city will host its first country musical festival from June 26-28 on Randall's Island. The three-day event will feature Bentley, Luke Bryan and Brad Paisley as headliners.
"Country artists love playing here," said Bentley, 38. "The energy is just so great. You come up to New York City and fall in love with it. I don't think there's a country artist who doesn't love New York – for two, three days."
And the city loves country right back: Bentley said he's witnessed it first hand. "In the early days it was like, 'We're going to New York City to play country music? Is anyone going to show up?'" he recalled. "I first played here in 2003 and was like 'Wow! There's a lot of fans here!' And over the years I've just seen that number increase. I've seen the fans get younger and more rowdy and they're hungry for it. The music's just changed so much it's connecting with a whole new audience."
What will a country festival look like in the middle of the city? Bentley said it will be worth checking out. "People in cowboy hats and cowboy boots in the subways and taxis … the visuals will be awesome," he joked. "There will be people in New York City scratching their heads going, what the hell is going on in my city? I'll be dying laughing."
