“We wanted something strong and clean with a little edge,” Hough tells PEOPLE. “Kaufman Franco is one of my favorite designers — the sexy simplicity that surrounds each dress is so dramatic and I’ve had so many amazing red carpet moments with them. We loved the cutouts that were subtle but a little rock ‘n’roll. I felt bold, sexy and elegant.”
The coolest part, though? The out-there beetle-bedecked handpiece she sported [below]. “[I loved] the amazing hand piece by the ridiculously talented jewelry designer Daniella Villegas,” she says. “Quite simply, she’s an artist. Sitting on the judges; panel I use my hands a lot and so it’s a really fun, incredibly unique piece of jewelry that’s eye catching and perfect for TV!”
Stylist Anita Patrickson says of the memorable jewelry choice: “We knew we we wanted something simple yet striking for the accessories and we were undecided until I sent Dani a picture of Julianne’s dress the morning of the show. Within 5 minutes she came back with this idea. The hand cuff was a surprise and she only saw it an hour before she had to be on set. I hadn’t wanted to get her hopes up in case were couldn’t get it in time. When she saw it and her face lit up, it made all the stress completely worth it!”

Hairstylist Riawna Capri kept things simple with Hough’s hair after a few weeks of braids and updos. “Tonight we wanted to do something effortless and free flowing so we enhanced her natural hair texture slightly just to polish it up,” she says — leaving the tough part up to wardrobe. “The biggest challenge [of the night] was figuring out how to put that amazing Daniela Villagas bracelet on and making sure it didn’t fly off!”
Makeup artist Marianna Elias echoes Capri in saying that Hough’s beauty look was smooth sailing. “I wanted to give her an intense but also natural look which I was able to accomplish by playing with warm tones like orange, gold, browns and greens,” she says. “Her skin tone and blue eyes allow for a vast range of colors to come together and create a truly unique look. Bottom line, mix and blend till you see a color that no one else has!” (P.S.: We love that she loves those wrinkle-reducing patches as much as we do!)
