In our weekly roundup of the looks that are gaining fashion ground (and the ones losing their style street cred), we saw vibrant red hues reigning in the color department and lots of see-through, lace-embellished dresses. Plus, one ’90s look that was so over the top it eclipsed Ciara’s throwback ensemble from last week.
Up: Shades of red. We have to give it to Sandra Bullock. Not only did the actress eschew the black dresses we’re used to seeing her in, but she managed to stand out big time on the red carpet in this J. Mendel dress at the Gravity premiere in Italy. And the vibrant color continued to pop up on stars across the pond. Freida Pinto selected an orangey-red Miu Miu mini at the Venice Film Festival and Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery broke away from her Lady Mary neutrals in this bold shift mini, also by Miu Miu.
Up: Sheer-Paneled Dresses. There was a whole lot of skin-baring this week in Hollywood (okay, there usually is a lot of that going on), but stars are getting really creative with their see-through fabrics. Leading the pack of brave celebs was Jessica Biel in her lace Dolce & Gabbana number. Beyoncé also stepped out in a figure-hugging black number with sheer side panels showing off her curves. And we’re still trying to figure out how Lily Collins avoided a wardrobe malfunction in her Michail Sykianakis dress with its extremely strategically placed lace, worn to the premiere of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones in Mexico City.
Down: OD-ing on the ’90s. It looks like Katy Perry didn’t heed the advice we gave to Ciara last week. She totally went all-out on ’90s trends (knee socks and all!) — and her grunge school girl look (worn to a VMAs after party) makes her look like Cher Horowitz’s evil twin sister. Maybe if she chose either the black bra top or skirt and ditched the combat boots, the situation would have turned out differently.
