How I Met Your Mother Series Finale Best Quotes

Josh Radnor and Cristin Milioti on How I Met Your Mother

"And that, kids, is how I met your mother."

With that line, How I Met Your Mother came to an end on Monday with an hour-long episode that finally wrapped up the story Ted (Josh Radnor) has been telling for nine seasons. While fans have known all along that Ted would meet The Mother (Cristin Milioti) at a train station platform in fictional Farhampton, Long Island, the show's final episode revealed several new twists in the story of the gang: Marshall (Jason Segel), Lily (Alyson Hannigan), Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin (Cobie Smulders).

Below, we recap the finale's best moments in quotes. Warning: There are a few spoilers!

You're totally in our gang now and once you're in, you're in for life.

The start of the episode brought us back to season one – and the year 2005 – in a new scene where Lily welcomed Robin into the fold.

Just be cool, lady, damn.

A flustered Ted Mosby advised the woman sitting next to him on the train platform to relax when she spied the pretty brunette (The Mother) he'd just been talking about standing not too far away.

Not like this. This is different.

An astute Lily noticed right away when Ted phoned The Mother a day after meeting to ask her out that there was something different about this girl.

When we got married, I made a vow that I would always tell you the truth.

This ominous admission by Barney was followed by a shocking revelation from Robin, who only an episode before had been a beaming bride: "We got divorced."

Judge Fudge, your very first ruling?

But as Barney and Robin's marriage crumbled, things only improved for Lily and Marshall, who finally became a judge after turning down his initial offer to go to Italy. The couple also welcomed a third child.

Sasquatch is a warm and affectionate creature. At this point, Robin's more like the Yeti, cold and aloof.

No longer content to hang out with her ex-husband, Robin lost touch with the gang – prompting Marshall to put his love of mythical creatures to use in describing her recent behavior.

You are the love of my life. Everything I have and everything I am is yours. Forever.

Speaking of Barney, the playboy protested that despite what everyone wanted, he'd never truly give his heart away. And he didn't – until the birth of his daughter.

To Ted Evelyn Mosby, a man with more emotional endurance than anyone I know. It was a long, difficult road. Thank God we finally got here.

While toasting to Ted on the day of his wedding to The Mother, Lily put words to not the gang's thoughts, but the audience's as well.

Those are my initials, TM: Tracy McConnell.

What do you know? Ted Mosby and his ladylove share the same initials, a coincidence they recognized when faux fighting over the rightful owner of the iconic yellow umbrella.

Mom's been gone for six years now. It's time.

Like many had suspected, Ted's marriage ended with the death of the woman we've spent nine seasons desperate to get to know. But it wasn't an unhappy ending for the show's protagonist, whose kids ultimately realized, "This is the story of about how you're totally in love with Aunt Robin and you're thinking about asking her out and if you want to know if we're okay with it." Answer: They were okay with, and ask out Robin is just what Ted did.
