We predicted that someone would show up to this year’s Oscars wearing a cape. And we were close. Kate Hudson selected a striking silver Atelier Versace gown, featuring a bolero (basically, a baby cape), and the unique dress needs your attention from all angles.

“I would call it a bolero,” Hudson’s stylist, Sophie Lopez, tells PEOPLE of the extra fabric draped on the back of Hudson’s custom creation. “It’s just like a little bolero, not a full cape. It was kind of like a 1930′s vibe.”

Not only does the plunging design show some skin from the front, but the dress also features a dramatic open back. The actress topped her skin-baring look with Jimmy Choo heels, a Versace clutch, Bulgari jewels and side-swept waves that nabbed a spot on our Beauty Awards list.

Until now, the most well-known red carpet cape moment in Oscars history was probably Gwyneth Paltrow’s white Tom Ford stunner. And Lupita Nyong’o tried the superhero-inspired trend at this year’s Golden Globes in Ralph Lauren collection. So how does Hudson’s look stack up? Share your thoughts in the comments!
