Anne Hathaway Poses Topless in Crystals, Explains Oscars Dress Rumors

Anne Hathaway is covering Harper’s Bazaar’s “Daring Issue” this November, which seems appropriate for a star who has fearlessly chopped her hair, gone platinum just for a big event, committed to some very bold pants and been one of our red carpet “ones to watch for years.” And in the magazine’s November issue, she chats all about controversial style — including that infamous Oscar dress flip-flop.

“I found a dress, like a month before … It was the most beautiful, reflective, shimmery dress — rainbows were going to dance off me,” she says. When it turned out to be unavailable, Valentino (“One of my favorite people in the entire world”) offered to lend her another look. Unfortunately, Hathaway discovered (as rumored) that her Les Misérables costar Amanda Seyfried would be in a very similar Alexander McQueen.

So she tried on another option the morning of the Academy Awards: the pale pink Prada. “I was like, ‘Wow! I can do this. It’s beautiful. It’s appropriate. It’s modern. It’s minimal,'” she says. “I look in the mirror, turn to [husband] Adam, and say, ‘It looks like my nipples are hard.’ He says, ‘You look beautiful. Your nipples look pointy. The red carpet’s about to close. We gotta go.'” And the rest is Twitter history.

With all those big red carpet moments under her belt, you may wonder: What does Hathaway consider to be her biggest style risk ever? “I f—ing think that pink Oscar dress!” she says in the interview, laughing. “Now that you know the backstory, that was by far in a way the most daring dress I have ever worn. It maybe didn’t look it, but that was it.”

These days, the Interstellar star doesn’t mind being a little controversial with her style, drawing inspiration from Man Repeller‘s Leandra Medine (“She wants girls to dress for themselves, be goofy, awesome girls”) and Tilda Swinton (“Tilda is it, but she’s so cool about it. She’s so cool, she’d be like, ‘Oh, it’s not daring. I just did it'”) and she’s less stressed about her own everyday style.

“I am getting more daring now,” she says. “I’ll wear my mom jeans in public that haven’t been tailored ‘just so’ yet, just because they feel good.” To us, that’s the coolest style of all (though we really dare her to hit the streets in the bejeweled Maison Martin Margiela “I Love You” crystal breastplate from the top shot above!).

For more from Hathaway, pick up Harper’s Bazaar on stands Oct. 21 or visit HarpersBazaar.com, and check out her new movie Interstellar on Nov. 7. And tell us: Are you surprised by her Oscars dress drama? How daring are you with your style?
