Sure, he was thrilled about being one of the honorees at PEOPLE's Ones to Watch party in Los Angeles on Thursday night, but Brett Eldredge was equally pumped about the company he's keeping in town.

"You've got to love California girls," Eldredge told PEOPLE. "You know, being a single guy, out here I'm always like, 'Wow there are so many beautiful girls in L.A.' I'm keeping my eyes open, maybe I'll meet that special gal tonight."

Ah, but will he be able to find a country girl in the city of angels? No sweat, said Eldredge.

"One of the biggest country stations in the world is right here in California, in Los Angeles," he said. "So there's a lot of big country fans out here and I love that ... and I get to mingle with all of Hollywood, it's good."

In fact, Eldredge, 28, who chatted up "All About That Bass" singer Meghan Trainor at the bash – they're talking about writing a song together! – said he's learned one lesson already from the Hollywood crowd.

"You're never cool enough," he said. "You know, it's like you just keep trying. A lot of people don't know your name or anything, but it's all right, you just keep making music and maybe one day everybody will know your name. You just got to keep dreaming and keep having fun with it."

As for whether he met the future Mrs. Eldredge on Thursday night, there's no word yet, but the current Mrs. Eldredge is thrilled her boy made PEOPLE's list.

"My mom's proud!" said Eldredge. "She was really excited when I told her."
