Chris Rock Returns to SNL, Shocks with 9/11, ISIS Jokes

Saturday night was a pretty good night to be in Studio 6H, to put it mildly.

Chris Rock returned to Saturday Night Live for the first time since 1996, Kenan Thompson did his usual heavy lifting and – oh yeah – his purple majesty Prince performed.

Rock's monologue went some strange places: He joked about the Boston Marathon bombing, 9/11 and the commercialization of Christmas. The crowd took a little while to get into Rock's routine, but eventually seem to warm to his material – especially when he cracked a joke about Easter.

Another highlight was Kenan Thompson anchoring a skit in which black pundits weighed in on Obama's presidency, because "it's too early for football and too late for church."

In a parody of Shark Tank, Chris Rock played a member of ISIS. Takeaway line: "Genocidal regimes are a very tricky business." Too much?

The show's pre-taped bit was inspired, featuring a gang of overly courteous bank robbers, who insure "sparkling or still" when offering their victims water.

The evening's musical guest was the one and only Prince, who came on with the group behind his newest album, 3RDEYEGIRL, and played an airtight medley of three songs that saw Prince hop from keyboards to guitar because … he's Prince.
