That's what, amid the sound of her own laughter, Amy Poehler told PEOPLE in Boston Wednesday about the ups and downs of being back on the singles scene.
"I find my relationships at 40-plus are really emulsified, juicy relationships, because you have more of a sense of who you are and who you want to be around," the actress and author, who's dating Nick Kroll, said after her Harvard Book Club appearance at the Back Bay Events Center.
"Talented men are not threatened by talented women. They welcome them. And same way with real men," she said. "If you're a strong woman and your man likes that, then he's a real man. If you're with someone who asks you to turn your light down, he's a weaker person and you should get away from him."
Poehler, 43, who split from her husband of 10 years, Will Arnett, in 2012, openly addressed the trials and tribulations of growing older, particularly in the public eye.
"We're a really youth-obsessed culture, and I'm in a business that's especially bananas," said Poehler, who was promoting her new book, Yes Please. "Hollywood is the moon. It's a really weird place. As a culture, we're obsessed with youth, and we don't celebrate enough of the amazing gifts and cool things that happen when you get older."
Seeing as the Saturday Night Live alum grew up just 30 minutes outside Boston, she brought along two very special guests: her parents, Eileen and William. Poehler also reminisced about her Boston accent, which she eventually eliminated – but not without some effort.
"I had to work on losing it. It comes out in a couple words – like 'government' – when I'm playing Leslie Knope," Poehler said, referencing her Parks and Recreation character. "It's a tough accent to lose. Nobody can get right – when you watch a movie and you're like, 'That motherf----r isn't from Boston. Nice try.' "
