The actor, who was on stage to present the Hollywood Documentary Award to Shep Gordon, struggled with the mic before scratching his head and admitting, "I'm not very good at this kind of thing."
Once Depp pulled his thoughts together – and got a few laughs from the audience – he turned his focus to the teleprompter. "Watch, I'm going to read this thing," he said.
Depp, 51, started off by sticking to the speech, but his slurred words quickly turned into his own rambling version filled with the actor's personal anecdotes.
Eventually, he was cut off by a clip honoring Gordon – and that's when the buzz about Depp's demeanor began.
Some thought his stage presence was funny and admitted to having new aspirations. "Life goal: to get drunk with Johnny depp," a fan Tweeted.
Others put a global spin on his performance. "Wow Johnny Depp is hammered! That's Australian for super drunk!" tennis star Rennae Stubbs wrote.
But actor Rob Lowe was anything but impressed. "I find the whole unprepared, 'i don't give a s--- ,' possibly wasted artist persona really, really unexciting," he Tweeted.
