Is Shailene Woodley Hollywood's undisputed Zen master?

The well-loved actress, 22, sure sounded that way while accepting a trophy at the Hollywood Film Awards Friday for her role as a teenager with cancer in The Fault in Our Stars, as she discussed how her character inspired her.

"At 16 years old, she recognizes it's not about how long a life we lead or the mark we leave on the world that matters. It's about simple things like gratitude and not taking anything for granted," she said while accepting the Hollywood breakout actress award.

"Every day we wake up and we're breathing, we're winning," she added. "We all already have victories on our plate the second we leave our pillows in the morning. [My character] reminded me of that, that simple truth."

The earthy actress – who wore a cleavage-baring dress flecked with stars – accepted the award from costar Laura Dern, who called her "the biggest open heart I know." Woodley showed off that openness as she calmly told the audience about her role in the film, based on the popular John Green novel.

"She recognizes at a young age that regardless of the conditions we have in our lives – whether they're spiritual, mental, physical whatever – they don't define us," said Woodley. "We are not defined by exterior situations."
